The final proof of the woodcut of the old Kilton Mine Shale Heap. I’ve printed in dark grey and two yellows for the industrial sky on Japanese Tissue, not the easiest block to cut, in fact hard work, but when finished it’s sufficiently melancholy for the subject matter. I can remember returning to Teesside on the train from Art School in Newcastle and being fascinated by the yellow skies which were probably caused by pollution from the steelworks, coke ovens and chemical works, there was a real other world and alien feel to it. Science Fiction skies if you like and once you started looking for them you could see them through the County Durham Coalfield on the way north up to Wearside and Tyneside but the reveal as you went south towards Teesside was something else, proper yellow skies.
