A first proof of another illustration for the book ‘Postcards from the Kentish Fenland’, this time showing a memorial stone for a young, unmarried girl who was robbed and murdered on her way home in August 1782. Needless to say the offender was caught and paid for his crime with his life and in those days there would be no chance of an appeal for a more lenient sentence. There will be text above the illustration but the formality of that layout is further down the design road when layout, type and design have been decided and finalised. There’s still more cutting to carry out to finish the block and the type for inscription on the stone has to be finessed a little more before it is completed.
Love the contrast between the lush vegetation and the starkness of the stone and it’s message…
