Know your place

The bookplate project just grew and grew, a bit like an apple tree. The original image of the tree was cut and printed for the local Primary School to go as a bookplate in a new collection of books for their school library. I said, ‘wouldn’t a bookmark would be nice to give to each child as a book is logged out’ and before I knew it I was producing about two hundred. Ah well, all in a very, very good cause. Hopefully they will help stop children turning page corners over to mark their place and thus the lovely new books will last longer, they’re all non-fiction too, and if the effort helps a child away from ipads, smart phones and laptops it will all be worth it. I’ve used about five or six different coloured papers but this one, printed in Copper Gold metallic, looks like a Caramac bar and I used to love a Caramac bar. Now all of the bookmarks have to be laminated and trimmed or they’d end up lasting about as long as Caramac bar, as in not very long.

  1. Caramac the bar of choice in my boyhood. Much more sophisticated than the “Milky Bar” kid and his sickly confections. Still both would be far to much for me in advanced old age!

Lovely work John, much better than your average leather marck.

  2. How generous of you!!! And what lucky children!

Holding a book and slipping in a lovely bookmark to keep your place after you’re done reading for the night……or to save your spot when you absolutely must put your book down for whatever reason……..is such a quiet pleasure.

I, for one, have never, ever turned down a page in a book to mark my place. I consider that a travesty to paper. Rather I have used a myriad of objects to hold my place – candy wrappers, clothing tags, tissues, old envelopes, a flower, a pencil……..you get the idea. 🙂
