One of a series of three small linocuts of the Fenland landscape and skies at dawn, midday and at dusk. The print featuring dawn shows a farm and buildings close to the Sixteen Foot Drain and the foreground amongst the reeds a manually operated guillotine slacker that controls the flow of water from the drainage dyke into the main drain. Many of these small manual methods of controlling the build-up and gathering of water have disappeared and been replaced by the ubiquitous electric pump. In the past one man would responsibility for one or more of these devices but times change.
