I’ve just finished the cover for a book written by my good friend Gareth Craddock and it’s being published by the Medlar Press. I’m at the stage where I have a long hard look at the finished linocut and wonder if I need to add anything else, it’s a sort of artist printmaker’s sense of insecurity I suppose. There are twelve colours printed in the image, a lot of work cutting and printing, but I’m so excited by the project I don’t care about the amount of work involved. As my father would have said ‘do the job properly or don’t bother’. Now it’s about the black and white images to go inside the book to match the high standard of typography that will be in there, visible, on every page. I have one more section illustration to complete then it is on to the chapter vignettes and incidental illustrations. The desolate landscape in this part of Kent is just the same as the Fenland landscape of West Norfolk, so in that respect I feel quite at home! Anyway, it’s now down to deciding how many more cuts and where they will go.

I received my copy of “Where are the Fellows who cut the Hay?” yesterday, together with a copy of your print. The print is ace, although disappointingly it arrived slightly damaged (not your problem).
This latest illustration looks just as good, as always – oh, to have your artist’s skill.

It’s late but I had to have one more look, John! It’s inspiring the heck out of me. Makes me want to go tenching out there and do it all over again.
I went out on my first bass fishing trip of the year yesterday. Caught a solitary rockling but loved the sping breeze and sea air. Still aiming for a bass or a great crested newt by the end of the week.
I just checked out the Two Terriers and saw that lovely apple, by the way- long may it last!
