When our children were small we used to stay near Bamburgh Castle up on the North East coast every summer. One evening a relation came in to see us absolutely breathless with excitement, he said that he had just seen a pink flamingo at the low water mark on Budle Bay. A Flamingo on the North East coast? Needless to say that we all rushed down to view this remarkable sighting for ourselves but inevitably the flamingo was nowhere to be seen. A rapidly produced print seemed to be an excellent way of immortalising the event, the pink flamingo that was seen on the way back from the pub.
