Here are just four of the sixteen section and chapter vignettes, they are all monochrome and each one supports a section or chapter heading in the book, ‘Where are the fellows who cut the hay’, I suppose in truth they are more like a decoration relieving the continual run of text. From top left there is a cut based on ‘Community’, with expression of community being the pub and the agricultural workers enjoying a pint after work. Top right is ‘Milk’ with the milk churns at the entrance to a farm road ready to be collected by the dairy lorry. Bottom right is ‘Wool’ with the towable shepherd’s hut where the shepherd lived through the lambing season so he could be right next to his flock and at bottom left ‘Work’ portrays a labourer who is turning the hay manually with a hayfork to allow it to dry evenly before it is carted away for storage as winter fodder.
